IPL on schedule despite Indian elections

This year's Indian Premier League T20 competition will not be rescheduled due to the election in India and starts on March 23 as planned.

This year's Indian Premier League will not be affected by the timing of elections in India and will start on March 23 as planned.

A potential clash with the country's general elections, which are expected to take place between April and May, led to speculation the latest edition of the IPL would go ahead in another country.

South Africa hosted the 2009 competition because it coincided with that year's multi-phase general elections.

But the date and venue has been agreed upon by the Board of Control for Cricket in India after discussions with federal and state officials.

A press release from the BCCI published by the International Cricket Council confirmed the timetable would not alter.

"Based on the preliminary discussions with the appropriate central and state agencies/authorities, it was decided that the 12th edition of the world's most popular and competitive T20 tournament will be scheduled to be played in India," the statement said.
