Ireland, Serbia RL brawl investigated

A rugby league international between Ireland and Serbia, which was abandoned after a brawl, is being investigated by the Rugby League European Federation.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances which caused the abandonment of Ireland's international against Serbia in Belgrade.

The match, organised as part of rugby league's 120th anniversary celebrations, was halted following a brawl that broke out after a Serbian water carrier allegedly made contact with an Ireland player.

It is understood up to four players had been sent off in the build-up to the incident, which prompted the Irish team to walk off the field on Saturday.

The Rugby League European Federation have been informed of the development.

A statement issued on Rugby League Ireland's Facebook page read: "The Ireland and Serbia match that took place yesterday was abandoned in the 65th minute.

"Ireland were winning 24-16 at the time. The RLEF are investigating the incident."
