The body of an Irish tourist who fell from a houseboat into the Murray River, near the NSW-Victorian border, has been recovered.

It's believed the 25-year-old hit his head when he plunged from the top deck of the boat about 1.40am on Saturday.

A wide-scale search effort was launched, including private vessels, and his body was found by Victorian police divers about 3.45pm on Saturday. The Irish national was staying on the vessel with friends.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
