Irish strikepower fuels AFLW's Giants

The GWS Irish forward duo and Gaelic football converts Yvonne Bonner and Cora Staunton are proving a handful for opposing defences.

Emerging AFLW star Yvonne Bonner has made a record-breaking start at GWS and given the Giants a second dose of Irish strikepower.

The 31-year-old Bonner is the first Giants player to kick a goal in each of the first four rounds of an AFLW season.

She is joint leading goalkicker at the club with compatriot and fellow Gaelic football product Cora Staunton, who is in her second season at GWS.

While they can speak a little Gaelic, the pair confirmed they were hardly confusing opposition defenders by speaking in their native tongue.

"We're not probably fluent in the Gaelic language, but they probably don't understand even when we speak English," Bonner joked.

"But it's great having Cora , she's been through it all last year, so she knows the ins and outs of it now and she can guide me with the different things and it's brilliant having a fellow Irish person."

Bonner 's sublime effort in round two against Carlton is a leading contender for the competition's goal of the year.

The biggest adjustment for Bonner has been dealing with the physicality of AFLW, something not permitted in Gaelic football.

A first win of the season last week over Collingwood has lifted the Giants hopes of making a finals run from the weaker conference, where they trail Brisbane and Geelong by four points with three rounds left.

To keep those aspirations alive, GWS need to score a home win on Sunday against Melbourne (2-2) from the other conference.

"We're delighted that we've still got a chance and it's in our own hands now, so it's another massive game," Bonner said.

"Melbourne are a great side and they had a really close game against North Melbourne on the weekend, so we know we've got our work cut out."
