Irish Sun drops topless pin-ups

The Irish version of Rupert Murdoch's tabloid The Sun has dropped its topless page three pin-ups.

The Irish version of Rupert Murdoch's tabloid The Sun has dropped its topless page three pin-ups, it announced Thursday, saying it "caters for a different audience" to the British edition.

The new editor of Britain's Sun has so far resisted pressure from feminist campaigners to stop printing the page three photographs.

But editor Paul Clarkson of the Irish sister paper said: "The Irish Sun... caters for a different audience in Ireland and we always strive to reflect our cultural differences here."

A statement from the No More Page Three campaign said it was "really pleased" with the decision, which it described as "a huge step in the right direction".

The move was welcomed by groups including the Girl Guides and Britain's biggest trade union, Unison.

"The tide has turned against showing these patronising images of women," said Unison general secretary Dave Prentis.

A statement from Girlguiding UK said it was "a hugely positive step for girls and women" and called for an end to the feature in the British edition of the paper.

Earlier this year, Britain's new Sun editor David Dinsmore said page three was safe from the axe in his paper.
