Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says her view of Islamic extremism as a more dangerous threat than anything Australia's faced before is formed after nearly two years of classified briefings and meetings with world leaders.

She says it's up to cabinet colleague Malcolm Turnbull to explain the basis of his views, after he cautioned while it was important not to be complacent about the national security threat from the Islamic State group it was just as essential not to overestimate it.

Ms Bishop told ABC radio the situation in the Middle East with extremist groups had been raised in every discussion she'd had with world leaders over the past year and she believed it was "a security risk that's more dangerous and more complex than we've seen before".
