Islamic Australians denounce IS as army warns of attacks

The father of a man who is fighting with Islamic State in Syria has hosted a community event denouncing the militant group.

Mohamed Elomar.

Mohamed Elomar is one of Australia's most high-profile defectors to IS. But his father, Mamdouh Elomar, has partly funded a community gathering that he says is a chance for Australians to unite.

"Islamic State, whatever they do, is not Islamic,” Mr Elomar said.

“What we see on TV is barbaric. We don't believe in this."

Mr Elomar donated $10,000 to the event.

It comes as the Australian Defence Force issues a warning to army officers that Muslim extremists could attack members of the military in Australia.

The warning of such a terrorist attack went out just 48 hours before Australia on Friday increased the public terrorism alert to High, News Corp Australia reported on Sunday.
