Islamic cleric calls for calm after Haider's death

A Muslim cleric in Melbourne has said tensions being felt in the country is an Australian problem - not an Islamic one.

Mourners at Nunan Haider's funeral

This year's Annual Islamic Conference is taking place this weekend, despite being largely overshadowed by the fatal shooting of Abdul Numan Haider.

Senior Islamic cleric Sheikh Mohammed Omran urged those in attendance to work alongside other Australians to improve tensions, and to "fight" for this change.

"Maybe "fight" is not the word... It should be removed from the dictionary. I don't want to be called a terrorist man," Sheikh Omran said.

Nearby in Melbourne, security was dramatically stepped up at today's AFL Grand Final. Football fans were confronted by a wall of security at the MCG, with twice as many police in attendance compared to last year's final.

Abdul Numan Haider's funeral was held at the Doveton Mosque in Melbourne on Friday.
