Israel Folau riding GWS wave

Israel Folau says he still keeps in contact with his former AFL teammates, and he hopes they can win this year's flag.

Star Wallabies fullback Israel Folau says he's stoked to see his former AFL side GWS reach a preliminary final, and he's not surprised in the slightest.

Folau is one of the biggest stars in world rugby, and he'll be gearing up for another big performance in Saturday night's Rugby Championship showdown with Argentina in Perth.

But the 27-year-old code-hopper is also caught up in GWS fever, and he hopes his former teammates can go all the way this year.

Folau played 13 games for the Giants in their inaugural season in 2012 before making the switch to rugby union.

The Giants won just two AFL games in Folau's stint there.

But GWS are now just one win away from reaching the grand final after beating Sydney by 36 points in last week's qualifying final.

The Giants will take on either Hawthorn or the Western Bulldogs in a home preliminary final next week.

"I'm excited. I'm stoked for them. Hopefully they can go all the way," Folau said.

"It would have been a little bit of a shock to most people they've come this far in such a short time.

"But for me it's no surprise.

"I saw how much talent there was at the club.

"I still talk to a lot of them. We always talk about those good old memories back in the time. I'm happy for them they're going well."
