Police are confident an item that has been detected underwater off Western Australia's Pilbara coast is a missing prawn trawler that had three fishermen on board.

Mason Carter, 26, Chad Fairley, 30, and 57-year-old Murray Turner failed to come back to Point Samson near Karratha in their 13-metre trawler, named the Returner, a fortnight ago.

On Wednesday, police said sonar equipment had picked up "an area of significant interest", south of the vessel's last known location. Police divers will travel there on Thursday.

The families of the missing men have been advised of the development.
