Jackson to play next two seasons in WNBL

Opals star Lauren Jackson is set to return from a chronic knee injury to play for Canberra Capitals.

Opals star Lauren Jackson will play the next two seasons for the Canberra Capitals in the WNBL after overcoming a potentially career-ending hamstring injury.

The WNBL sent out a release on Friday announcing the 32-year-old's return ahead of the season's tip-off on October 4.

Jackson will suit up against the Sydney Uni Flames on the Capitals' home court at the AIS Arena a day after the season-opener.

While the Capitals say Jackson hasn't yet signed with the club, it is expected they will make the announcement next week after a final round of talks with her manager.

There had previously been concerns for Jackson's long-term future after Canberra's medical staff failed to find any answers for a chronic hamstring complaint she first injured during preparations for the 2012 London Olympics.

She was supposed to begin a $1 million, three-season deal with seven-time champions Canberra last October but had not been able to take the court despite intensive rehabilitation.

Fortunately for WNBL fans a visit to Melbourne doctor David Young - employed by AFL club Western Bulldogs - ended months of frustration for the four-time Olympian in January with career-saving surgery.

Having feared for her playing career, Jackson previously told reporters she had shed tears of relief when doctors finally diagnosed the cause.

Jackson's return will be a huge boost for the Capitals, who haven't featured in the finals since the 2010-11 season.
