Jacob Lillyman's frustrating final NRL season in Newcastle has been ended prematurely after he was ruled out of his farewell clash with St George Illawarra with a groin injury.

A veteran of 265 NRL games to go with seven State of Origin series victories across 14 games for Queensland, Lillyman was injured at training this week and has been ruled out of Saturday's game.

It means Chris Heighington will be the Knights' sole retiring player in the match, running out for 338th and final time to stay seventh on the list of most-capped players.

Lillyman's injury caps off a frustrating year for the 34-year-old who has played just 15 games for the Knights.

"At training the other day I broke down again. It's just too painful," Lillyman said.

"It's been a bit of a tough year. I probably haven't had the contribution I wanted to have on the field for a few reasons.

"But in saying that I've still really enjoyed coming here and being a part of the club."

Lillyman will move back to New Zealand with his family but he's hopeful he'll be able to see a lasting impact on his younger teammates at Newcastle.

Brought across to impart some experience on the Knights' forwards, he's worked closely with Josh King and Herman Ese'Ese as the club continues their rebuild.

"I've made a point of helping some of the young forwards and giving them a bit of advice and tips," he said.

"I'm not a ranter and raver. I'm pretty easy going and approachable so if they have things they want to talk about I can help them.

"I really hope this year is a massive year for them and they improve and go again.

"Hopefully next year is a much better year and it sets them up for the future. It's a proud club that deserves to get back to great heights."

STATS THAT MATTER:

* Newcastle have won two of their past 12 games against the Dragons.

* Newcastle are ranked 15th in attack since Origin, while the Dragons are 16th.

* The Dragons average the most points per game in the 20 minutes after halftime, while Newcastle concede the most.
