Jada lands Batman prequel

Jada Pinkett Smith will play gangster boss Fish Mooney in the new Fox TV Batman drama Gotham.

Jada Pinkett Smith will play a "sadistic villain" in an upcoming Batman TV prequel.

She told fans in a Facebook post on Wednesday she's landed the role in the Fox TV drama Gotham and can't wait to return to the small screen.

"Last night, I decided to accept the role of Fish Mooney, who is the sadistic villain in the upcoming Batman prequel, Gotham, for Fox TV," she wrote.

"I've committed to a year to work alongside a very talented cast, a super cool, creative and talented head writer and an extraordinary director. This one...is going to be funnnnnn! Stay tuned:)".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gotham is an original tale that focuses on the story of DC Comics character, commissioner James Gordon, to be played by Ben McKenzie.

Jada's character Fish Mooney is described as an "imposing and hotheaded" gangster boss and nightclub owner "who has the street smarts and almost extrasensory abilities to read people like an open book".

She's also boss of notorious villain The Penguin, who will be played by Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara as Gotham City PD Captain Essen, Sean Pertwee as Bruce Wayne's servant Alfred and Erin Richards as Gordon's romantic interest.

The actor who will portray Bruce Wayne/Batman has not yet been revealed. Catwoman, The Joker and Riddler are also expected to appear in the story.

Gotham is being written and executive produced by The Mentalist's Bruno Heller, with CSI, Nikita's Danny Cannon directing and executive producing the pilot, according to THR.

A pilot date has yet to be announced.
