A Sydney voice-over artist who told an 11-year-old girl not to tell anyone about his sex attack on her "because we'll lose everything" will spend at least two and half years behind bars.

Andrew Julian John Carlton sexually assaulted the girl as she slept in November 2014.

Sentencing Carlton in Sydney District Court on Friday, Judge Clive Jeffreys detailed how the 45-year-old had then told the child: "This is against the law, but I'm a man and you're turning into a lady. Don't tell anyone because we'll both lose everything."

The court heard the girl awoke to find Carlton sexually assaulting her and he asked if he should keep going or stop.

She asked him to stop and he did.

"It seems to me that the offending was opportunistic in that the offender, whilst the child was asleep, commenced his activity and also that the offending stopped immediately upon the complainant requesting that it stop," Judge Jeffreys said.

The court heard that Carlton took part in a "deniers program" designed for men who will not accept they have committed a sexual crime.

Judge Jeffreys noted a clinical and forensic psychologist had found there was a low to moderate risk that Carlton would reoffend.

Carlton's loved ones wiped away tears as the judge handed down a sentence of four years and six months, with a non-parole period of two years and six months.

With time already served, Carlton will be eligible for parole in September 2018.
