Jakarta relationship can be repaired: govt

Australia's relationship with Indonesia will be repaired but it may take some time, Defence Minister David Johnston says.

Defence Minister David Johnston says it will take some time for Australia and Indonesia to repair their relationship following the recent claims about Australian spying activities.

Senator Johnston says the federal coalition government wants the strongest possible relationship with Australia's northern neighbour.

"Despite the recent suspension by Indonesia of a number of bilateral defence activities, this Government remains committed to strengthening and deepening the defence relationship," he told an Australian Strategic Policy Institute dinner in Canberra on Tuesday.

Indonesia halted joint defence activities following reports Australian intelligence monitored the mobile phone calls of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and his inner circle.

President Yudhoyono is now considering Australia's formal response from Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

"It will take some time for current issues in bilateral relations to be worked through, but they will be resolved in time," Senator Johnston said.

When that happens, Indonesia will find Australia to be a steady, reliable partner, willing to work closely on strengthening the defence and security relationship.

"As defence minister I will do my best to contribute to that by being a frequent visitor to Indonesia," he said.

"Building trust is essential and that can only be done through personal contact and mutual respect."
