Essendon coach James Hird is suing his club's insurance company for refusing to pay more than $640,000 in legal bills he faces over the doping saga.
His writ in the Victorian Supreme Court says Chubb Insurance declined to pay the $573,588 cost of his failed bid to sue the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority in the Federal Court last year.
Hird unsuccessfully argued that ASADA'S investigation into him and Essendon players over their supplements program was unlawful.
Chubb also refused to pay $68,552 for the appeal Hird lost this year, saying club executives were only covered for legal costs when they were defendants, not claimants.
There will be a directions hearing on August 21.
