Actor Jane Lynch has teamed up with her psychologist former wife Lara Embry to write her first children's picture book.

The Glee star has penned Marlene, Marlene, Queen of Mean, about a school bully and her efforts to reform after one child stands up to her and makes her realise her mistakes.

And Lynch reveals she drew inspiration for the main character from Sue Sylvester, the rude and bossy gym teacher she plays on Glee.

Announcing the news on Twitter on Thursday, she writes: "TWEEPS (Twitter people)! My kids book's a comin' (sic)! Marlene Marleen (sic) Queen Of Mean. A young plucky Sue Sylvester type kid figures it out!"

The book, illustrated by Tricia Tusa, will be published by Random House in September (14).

Lynch previously turned author to write her Happy Accidents memoir.

The actress split from Embry in 2013 after three years of marriage. Their divorce was finalised in January.
