Japan decommissions ageing reactors

Three ageing nuclear reactors on Japan's coast are being decommissioned amid fears of atomic power following the Fukushima meltdown.

Two Japanese power companies will decommission three ageing nuclear reactors on the Sea of Japan Coast amid lingering fears of atomic power following the 2011 triple meltdown at the Fukushima complex.

Kansai Electric Power Co announced the decommissioning of the Mihama plant's reactors 1 and 2, which went into service in 1970 and 1972, respectively.

Japan Atomic Power Co also decided to decommission the 45-year-old Tsuruga plant's unit 1.

All three reactors are located in Fukui prefecture, about 400 kilometres west of Tokyo.

Two other power companies - Chugoku Electric Power Co and Kyushu Electric Power Co - are expected to make similar decisions on Wednesday, the Kyodo News agency reports.
