Japan talks on disaster risk reduction

Cyclone Pam's timing has added an extra dimension to a conference in Japan on disaster risk reduction.

When Cyclone Pam carved its devastating path through Vanuatu late last week-- its President Baldwin Lonsdale was, ironically, attending the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Japan.

The meeting provides an opportunity for world leaders to commit to a renewed global strategy to reduce the risk of disasters --which the have increased significantly in the past decade.

The Deputy Director of ActionAid Australia, Michelle Higelin, has been attending the talks in Sendai.

She told Manny Tsigas that while devastating -- Cyclone Pam's timing has added an extra dimension to the conference.
