Two teenaged members of Japanese girl group AKB48 have been hospitalised after being attacked by a man wielding a saw at one of the band's regular fan events.

The girls,18-year-old Anna Iriyama and 19-year-old Rina Kawaei, both broke bones in their right hands and received cuts on their arms and heads.

Reports say the attack came after a mini concert yesterday afternoon in Iwate, northern Japan, as fans were lining up to meet them.

A male with the band was also cut in the attack.

They were taken to hospital for treatment and a 24-year-old unemployed man was arrested.
