Japanese swimmer suspended for theft

The Japan Swimming Federation has suspended a swimmer for 18 months, after he stole a news agency's camera at the Asian Games last month.

Japanese swimmer Naoya Tomita has received an 18-month suspension for stealing a camera during the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, the Japan Swimming Federation says.

The federation on Tuesday suspended the 25-year-old swimmer until March 31, 2016 after he admitted to stealing a camera owned by the Yonhap News Agency left at poolside in the press section by a South Korean reporter on September 25.

Tomita, who won the Asian Games gold medal in the 200m breaststroke in 2010, was kicked off the Japan team on the spot and fined one million won ($A1000) after being identified on CCTV placing the camera in his bag.

Tomita's employer, sports apparel manufacturer Descente Ltd, also dismissed the swimmer on Tuesday.
