The motorised hackney cab, traditionally known as London's black taxi cab, has been an icon for 100 years.
London's taxis date back to 1834, with the design concept accounting for a gentleman of five-foot-eight being able to sit in the back wearing a top hat.
In keeping with the design of the horse drawn era, a Japanese manufacturer has unveiled the black cab of the future.
Nissan's chief planning officer Andly Palmer said the the company had tried to create "an iconic vehicle for an iconic city".
"If you want to create those icons then you've really got to be dedicated to doing it properly and if we're going to do this, then we needed to make a bowler hat for the city of London," he said.
However it is not only in London the manufacturer is trying to modernise an iconic fleet - the same vehicle has been reworked for New York City, Barcelona and Tokyo.
"We'e taken a base vehicle which is the NV 200 and in each case redesigned it in a way that is sympathetic to the particular cities that we're going [to]," Mr Palmer said.
