The federal opposition claims Japan is getting a red carpet ride on its bid to build the Australia's next-generation fleet of submarines.

Japan is getting a "red carpet ride" for its bid to build Australia's next-generation fleet of submarines, federal Labor claims.

A competitive evaluation process is under way for the contract, with Japan, France and Germany in the running ahead of an announcement in early 2016.

Senator Stephen Conroy, appearing on Sky News on Thursday, queried why Japanese officials were escorted around the ASC shipyard in Adelaide by senior navy and Defence officials while the French and Germans were left to wander around the place by themselves.
