Australian Jarmila Wolfe is likely to miss the remainder of the European clay court tour after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The former world No.25, who has now slipped to 189 in the rankings, went under the knife in Texas on Thursday to fix what has turned into a long-term problem in her left shoulder.

"I been playing with pain my shoulder for almost a year and (in the) last few weeks it's been getting worse and was struggling to play and train as much as I would like to," Wolfe said.

Wolfe climbed the rankings ladder in 2010 after back-to-back fourth-round finishes at the French Open and Wimbledon, before she returned to the third round in both events the following year.

However since 2012 she won just two matches in majors, and was forced to retire in her first-round match at the Australian Open this year with an injured back.

"As you all know I been through a lot last four years and was hoping finally for a good time in my tennis career and get in back to where it used to be few years back but I had another little set back," she said.

"I look at it as a little bump on the road and I know it will make me stronger and more hungry for success and for my comeback. I am not giving up my dream and I am motivated and have great team of people around me."
