NEWLY APPOINTED HAWTHORN SKIPPER JARRYD ROUGHEAD:

* 2004: Recruited by Hawthorn with pick No. 2 in the national draft, ahead of Hawks teammates Lance Franklin and Jordan Lewis

* 2005: Makes his AFL debut in round three against Essendon

* 2008: Wins his first premiership with the Hawks, kicking 75 goals for the season including two majors in the grand final win over Geelong

* 2013: Kicks 68 goals to take out the Coleman Medal, is also named an All-Australian for the first time

* 2014: Second All-Australian title

* July 2015: Sidelined indefinitely after having a melanoma cut from his lip

* May 2016: Diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer, which has also spread, and undergoes debilitating immunotherapy treatment

* December 2016: Declares himself cancer free and returns to full training

* January 2017: Replaces Luke Hodge as Hawks captain

STATS:

* 231 games, four premierships, goal tally of 491 - the sixth-most of any Hawks player
