Jason Day wins second Greg Norman Medal

Jason Day has again been hailed as Australia's best golfer on the international stage, claiming his second successive Greg Norman Medal.

Jason Day has claimed his second consecutive Greg Norman Medal, named Australia's best golfer on the world's stage.

Day held off competition from world No.7 Adam Scott and up-and-coming female star Minjee Lee to back up last year's inaugural medal.

"I am incredibly honoured to win the Greg Norman Medal for the second year in a row," Day said.

"Australian golf is in a great place right now. Adam and Minjee both had excellent seasons, so to be selected again is a real privilege."

The world No.1 claimed three victories on the US PGA Tour, maintaining top spot in the rankings for the past 36 weeks, the longest run for an Australian since Norman in 1997.

He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the World Golf Championship matchplay event in successive weeks, before claiming the The Players Championship in May.

He also finished second in the US PGA Championship, and led the Fedex Cup standings until late in the season before he struggled with a back injury, which eventually ruled him out of the Australian summer.

"Jason is yet again a deserving recipient of the Greg Norman Medal," PGA of Australia chief executive Brian Thorburn said.

"An excellent ambassador for Australian golf, his performances this year has ensured he has been the World No.1 for the majority of 2016 to the delight of Aussie fans."

Day appeared via video link as he continued to recover from his back issues in the USA, while his mother Dening Day accepted the award on his behalf at Royal Pines, ahead of this week's Australian PGA Championship.

Five-time Open Championship winner Peter Thomson became the inaugural honouree to be named an Australian golf immortal.

Thompson won 79 tournaments from 1947-76, but was also recognised as being the longest-running chairman of the Australian PGA between 1962 and 1994.

Adam Blyth was named the Australasian PGA Tour player of the year after winning two of his 12 events, while Stacey Keating took out the honours in the ALPG Tour with four wins.
