Jealous ex-lover guilty of murder

Manisha Patel, who stabbed, smothered and strangled her ex-lover's fiancee, Purvi Joshi, in a Sydney unit in 2013, has been found guilty of murder.

Purvi Joshi spent her last night alive dining with her fiance and talking about their happiness.

The following morning she'd been stabbed, smothered and strangled by his former lover.

A jury on Wednesday found Manisha Patel, 32, guilty of murdering Ms Joshi in the early hours of July 30, 2013, in the couple's south Sydney apartment.

During the trial, the crown alleged Patel was motivated by "anger and jealousy" to kill the new fiancee of her ex-lover, Niraj Dave, weeks after she'd moved to Australia for love.

But Patel pleaded not guilty, saying she was forced to kill Ms Joshi in self defence after revealing she'd fallen pregnant to Mr Dave after the engagement and had a termination.

Patel bowed her head and cried after the guilty verdict was handed down.

The trial previously heard Patel went to work, called Mr Dave and had two mundane conversations with him after killing Ms Joshi.

Mr Dave found his 28-year-old fiancee in their Kyeemagh bedroom with bruising to her neck and a knife sticking out of her abdomen when he returned from a night shift around 7am.

"I saw her face was black," he told the trial.

"I touched her, held her hand, asked her, 'Purvi are you okay? Answer me'."

Mr Dave also said Patel had sent him a message saying "I hate you, I love you, I hate you, I love you, I hate you ... LOL" in the days after the abortion, but it had not concerned him.

CCTV footage showed Patel leaving her Parramatta flat and driving to a convenience store near Mr Dave and Ms Joshi's unit about 3am on the morning of the murder.

The trial heard she lied to police a number of times and tied a knot in her shirt to cover a bloodstain during questioning shortly after the murder.

When police noticed, Patel told them it was red paint and part of an Indian good luck custom.

She also called emergency services in the days following Ms Joshi's death and claimed she too had been stabbed in the abdomen by two unknown men.

The crown alleged the wounds were self-inflicted in an attempt to throw the murder investigation off course.

Mr Dave and Patel lived together after meeting on a matrimonial website in 2011.

He met Ms Joshi 18 months later and travelled to India where they arranged to marry.

Despite the engagement, Patel and Mr Dave had drunken sex in Dubai and she became pregnant.

Mr Dave said Patel did not know about the engagement at the time.

Officer in charge James Dark said the verdict was "a good result" for Mr Dave and Ms Joshi's family, none of whom were in the court for the verdict.

Patel will return to court for sentencing proceedings on September 10.
