Robert Jennings has returned to South Sydney pre-season training despite not yet being contracted to the NRL club for 2019.

The sight of the winger sweating and slogging it out at Redfern Oval on Monday morning raised eyebrows among those watching on.

It's believed that Jennings has agreed to terms with the Rabbitohs, however, they cannot yet fit him under the salary cap.

He is in a similar situation to John Sutton, whose new deal was only announced two weeks ago after the club released Zane Musgrove.

It's believed the club must offload players to get Jennings' deal across the line.

The sight of Jennings training alongside teammates is the strongest indication yet he will be a part of the Rabbitohs squad under new coach Wayne Bennett.

"He's a good kid, he's under control," Rabbitohs teammate Sam Burgess said.

"We've had some good conversations.

The office staff and (general manager of football) Shane Richardson) and (team manager) Mark (Ellison) are hopefully able to get it sorted quickly because I think he's one of the most valuable players in the team."

Prior to the Rabbitohs being bundled out of the finals by eventual premiers the Sydney Roosters, Jennings said he wanted to remain at Souths after enjoying a breakout season in 2018.

After nailing down a starting spot, he finished the year with 19 tries, the third most in the league behind David Fusitua (23) and Valentine Holmes (22).
