An engine has failed on a plane taking off from Melbourne Airport, disrupting flights and stranding the Vietnam Airlines passengers in the city for a night.
The incident happened as the nose of Vietnam Airlines flight 780 to Ho Chi Minh City lifted off from the runway on Tuesday morning.
Debris and small fires were thrown from the engine on the Airbus A330 aircraft as it failed, a Melbourne Airport spokeswoman said.
No one was hurt but the plane came to a stop at the intersection of two main runways, disrupting flights, she said.
"Debris came out of the aircraft's engine along with little spot fires but it was nothing major," the spokeswoman said.
"Let me assure you that everyone was safe and no one was in any danger."
Flights to and from the airport resumed after more than 30 minutes when the jet was towed from the runway and debris cleared.
A Vietnam Airlines spokeswoman, Oana Nguyen, said there would be no more flights to Vietnam on Tuesday.
She said passengers were in the care of airline staff at the airport and would be accommodated overnight as necessary.
A passenger, Peter, told ABC radio the plane sat on the runway for 30 minutes after the incident.
He said the nose had begun lifting during take-off when engine two failed, forcing the pilot to abandon the flight.
He was unsure how many people were aboard but said the plane was three-quarters full.
