Desperate to stay in touch with the top six as the season draws to an end, Newcastle are planning an all out assault when they face Western Sydney on Sunday.

The Jets sit in eighth place, four points adrift of a finals spot, but are fast running out of time to secure a top six finish with only seven games remaining.

The Jets come into this game off the back of a 2-0 loss to Sydney FC while the Wanderers will need to rebound following their disappointing 3-1 Asian Champions League loss to Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday.

But if Newcastle are to be any chance of getting their first win against the second-placed Wanderers this campaign coach Clayton Zane knows they'll need to come out on the attack.

The Jets have only scored 20 goals from their 20 games this season, with only Perth Glory (19 goals) possessing a worse attacking record.

Zane said striker Joel Griffiths is likely to get his first start this season with the likes of Emile Heskey and Adam Taggart also adding fire power up front as the coach looks to be as potent as possible in attack.

"We're looking at having a lot more thrust going forward in the side," he said.

"We're looking to shake things up a little bit and go with a much more attacking line up."

The Wanderers do enjoy a great record against the Jets, with just one defeat from their five previous meetings.

But their last encounter ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Hunter Stadium a month ago and Zane feels he has them covered.

"We already have a good idea tactically how to approach the game," he said.

"We came out of that with a point so it will be very similar from a tactical perspective."

Zane will get Dutch defender Kew Jaliens back from suspension with Taylor Regan possibly making way for him while David Carney is likely to again start from the bench.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic, meanwhile, is likely to make a few changes to freshen his squad for what will be the club's third game in eight days.
