Jobless rate high but not as bad as some

At six per cent, the Australian jobless rate is well below the average among OECD countries.

It may be of cold comfort for people looking for work, but Australia's jobless rate is comfortably below the world's average.

Figures released in Australia on Thursday showed the jobless rate ticking up to six per cent in June from 5.9 per cent the previous month.

It remains close to its 12-year high of 6.3 per cent seen at the start of the year.

In its Employment Outlook for 2015, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development expects unemployment among its 34 member countries - including Australia - will remain relatively high even by the end of 2016.

It says while labour market conditions have generally improved since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis, employment growth has been slow and very uneven across countries.

"The jobs mix has shifted towards more part-time work and away from manufacturing and construction jobs, which may be making it harder for some unemployed to find full-time jobs," it says in the report released on Thursday.

At the end of 2014, the average OECD unemployment rate stood at 7.1 per cent, still 1.6 percentage points above its pre-crisis level.

Unemployment is projected to continue its slow decline during the rest of 2015 and 2016, reaching 6.6 per cent in the final three months of 2016.

The OECD expects unemployment will remain above 20 per cent in Greece and Spain.
