Jobs growth encouraging: Abetz

Employment Minister Eric Abetz says the rise in the labour force participation rate means that more people are confident about entering the jobs market.

Employment Minister Eric Abetz has played down the jump in the jobless rate in July, pointing instead to an increase of 38,500 in the number of people employed.

"The strengthening employment growth figures are encouraging," Senator Abetz said in a statement on Thursday.

New figures show the jobless rate jumped to 6.3 per cent from an upwardly revised 6.1 per cent in June, which Senator Abetz said was a result of a rise in the participation rate and indicated more people are feeling confident about entering the jobs market.
