Jobs more important than trash: Qld oppn

Queensland's Liberal National Party says the state government should prioritise humans over environmental needs.

Jobs are more important than reducing pollution, Queensland's opposition says.

The state government is considering restricting plastic shopping bag use and bringing in a container deposit scheme to reduce rubbish in the environment.

Environment Minister Steven Miles says turtles are particularly vulnerable to refuse.

But Deputy Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek says the government should prioritise humans over environmental needs.

"We are concerned whether these are measures that might lead to increased cost of living for for Queenslanders," he said.

"It's really important that Labor get with the other things that Queenslanders would like to see and that is a plan for jobs."

A state government advisory group is considering a container deposit scheme, which would give people a cash refund for each container they recycled.

South Australia and the Northern Territory already have container deposit schemes and the NSW government is committed to introducing one by July 2017.
