Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne has been outed for a month after returning a positive to a banned appetite suppressant.

Racing Victoria stewards on Thursday banned Payne from riding in races and trackwork until July 21.

Payne pleaded guilty and said she took full responsibility and regretted not finding out more information from her doctor about the medication..

Payne was prescribed Phentermine by her doctor to treat gastrointestinal problems, connected to injuries sustained in a fall last year.

The positive result is from a sample taken at the Swan Hill Cup meeting on June 11.

She was stood down from riding in races and trackwork from June 23.
