Joel Monaghan captains Warrington

Former Canberra and Sydney Roosters rugby league player Joel Monaghan takes over from retired brother Michael as captain of English club Warrington.

Warrington rugby league club have appointed Australian winger Joel Monaghan as their new captain for 2015.

The 32-year-old former Canberra and Sydney Roosters player, who is embarking on his fifth season of Super League, takes over from older brother Michael, who retired at the end of 2014, and Ben Westwood who shared the duties following the departure of Adrian Morley just over 12 months ago.

England forward Chris Hill becomes vice-captain. The appointments were made during the Wolves' warm-weather training camp in Spain's Canary Islands, from which they returned on Saturday.

Warrington head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith said: "Joel's leadership qualities and knowledge of the game made him the stand-out candidate.

"Over the years he's developed as a leader and has become very influential within the group. He's highly respected by all the players and staff.

"Relieving Ben of this role will allow him to focus on getting back to his best form."
