Joel Monaghan fires Wolves in thriller

Warrington have downed Castleford in an English Super League thriller thanks to a crucial try to former Australia and Origin winger Joel Monaghan.

Former NSW and Australia winger Joel Monaghan grabbed the crucial try to help Warrington Wolves finally see off Castleford Tigers 40-30 in an enthralling encounter on Sunday.

Castleford notched up 24 points in 11 first-half minutes to stun their visitors and take a 24-12 lead into half-time, with former Sydney Rooster Justin Carney starting things off before Weller Hauraki, Adam Miller and Karl Dixon joined him on the scoresheet.

However, Warrington weren't about to surrender and they scored three tries in the first five minutes after the break through Brad Dwyer, Richie Myler and Mickey Higham to take the lead.

The scoring was far from over and Craig Huby levelled for Tigers, only to see Higham grab a second to nudge the Wolves back in front before former Canberra Raider Monaghan put the game to bed 10 minutes from the end to hand Warrington an 11th win in 12 matches.

Elsewhere, Bradford Bulls saw off the challenge of Wakefield Wildcats 26-24 thanks to a try double from Keith Lulia.

Bulls had trailed 12-0 before Lulia struck just before the interval, with Tom Olbison, Brett Kearney and Jamie Foster seeing Bradford home in the second-half despite a later Wildcats fightback.

Meanwhile, Huddersfield Giants returned to the top of the table with a comfortable 46-4 victory over Salford City Reds.

Danny Brough helped himself to 16 points while Jermaine McGilvary and Jamie Cording scored two tries each and David Faiumu also crossed.
