Australian surfer Joel Parkinson has clinched his third consecutive Hawaiian Triple Crown.

Fellow Australian Adrian Buchan was the only person with enough points to stop Parkinson winning the Hawaiian leg of the world championship tour but had to win the Pipeline Masters.

Buchan was eliminated in the quarter-finals, easily beaten by world champion Kelly Slater.

But Kieren Perrow won through to the semis, pipping South African Jordy Smith 12 points to 13.

The third Australian, Owen Wright, lost to Jeremy Flores of France.

Flores meets Slater in the semis and Perrow takes on American Dane Reynolds.

Gilmore barrels ahead

In the women's draw, current four-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore continued her golden year, winning her third women's Triple Crown in the two-metre swell.

While Gilmore said she was delighted to have navigated the treacherous conditions to win the Jewel at Backdoor Pipeline event, and another Triple Crown.

"I would trade it all to have another session out there with no one out," Gilmore said.

"It was just exciting to be out there with the girls. I got pretty smashed on my first wave, but you just get in to a zone where you want the biggest and best waves and I got that one nice barrel."
