A female joey has been rescued after her mother was killed by a car on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula.

The four-month-old joey was found in her mother's pouch after police spoke to a distraught woman who struck the kangaroo at Tuerong about 11.30pm on Thursday (AEST).

The baby was taken to the Balnarring Animal Rescue centre where she was assessed and police say she will be taken to a wildlife sanctuary.
