Mr Howard will join fellow Australian Lord Robert McCredie May, a distinguished UK-based scientist, and 18 other members at the luncheon on Wednesday.

The luncheon is held every two years but this is the first one Mr Howard will attend after he was presented with his insignia by the Queen in May 2012, Buckingham Palace said.

The Order is a rare honour awarded to individuals "of great achievement in the fields of the arts, learning, literature and science or other exceptional service".

It was created by King Edward VII in 1902 and is the sole gift of the sovereign.

It's restricted to 24 living members and there are currently 23.

Foreigners previously given the Order of Merit have included General Eisenhower, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela.

Mr Howard was assured of an invitation to Margaret Thatcher's funeral in April 2013 as a member of the Order of Merit at that time.
