More than a decade after he left politics it was again John Howard's time to shine in Canberra.
The 79-year-old former prime minister still had what it takes on Tuesday, capably working the room at the opening of the Howard Library at Old Parliament House.
With a bevy of flashing cameras trailing in his wake, a beaming Howard shook the hands and kissed the cheeks of those gathered to witness his moment, among them current Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
The exhibition, which details the story of Howard's time as prime minister in what were some of the best years for the Liberal Party, was officially opened by Morrison who labelled his predecessor the "greatest prime minister of this country".
The day after his party moved to change the rules on leadership challenges, Morrison couldn't resist a light-hearted jab at his own expense in his tribute.
"In 2007 John Howard completed his innings after 11-and-half-years as prime minister - in the modern political era that is truly inspiring," he said.
"He is an example to the modern Liberals, and indeed prime ministers, who can only dare to walk in shoes so large."
The exhibition will display official and personal papers from Howard's time in office as well as items of furniture and his iconic Wallabies tracksuit.
Praising the exhibition for its bipartisan approach and "mild criticism", Howard said the finished product exceeded his "wildest expectations".
However, the veteran politician couldn't resist ending with a pitch for his party ahead of an upcoming election.
"You will have my total, undivided, uncompromising support, I believe in you, I believe in the future coalition," he said to Morrison.
