The nephew of Aussie founder John Symond is the new chief executive of the home loan group.

James Symond has been with the company since his uncle established it in 1992, working his way up to be leader of its sales team and an executive director.

He replaces Ian Corfield in the top role, who joined Aussie from Bankwest in June 2013.

"It was clear after a rigorous international search and comparing a number of external candidates, James was the candidate with the best industry knowledge, track record and passion to be Aussie's CEO," executive chairman John Symond said in a statement on Monday.

Aussie currently has a loan portfolio worth more than $57 billion, and markets itself as a major competitor to the big four banks.

Commonwealth Bank increased its stake in Aussie to 80 per cent in 2013 and will eventually take John Symond's remaining 20 per cent interest.
