Mitchell Johnson has been scratched from the remainder of the Champions League with a rib injury but will still travel with Australia to the UAE as planned.

Spearhead Mitchell Johnson is still battling a rib injury and won't be released to join his Champions League side in the lead-up to Australia's tour against Pakistan in the UAE.

Cricket Australia have informed Kings XI Punjab that Johnson won't be made available to them for the remainder of the Champions League tournament currently being played in India.

Johnson will still travel as scheduled with the Australian T20 and one-day squads on Sunday, but is still battling to overcome rib damage he picked up on the recent tour of Zimbabwe.

With Shane Watson ruled out and Michael Clarke fighting to recover from a hamstring problem, Australia are sweating on their most experienced and lethal bowler recovering in time to take on Pakistan.

Australian general manager of team performance Pat Howard says Johnson will continue to work with medical staff before the green light is given to his return.

"Unfortunately Mitchell is not back to 100 per cent fitness so we will not be releasing him to Kings XI Punjab for the remainder of the Champions League," said Howard.

"He will travel with the squad to Dubai on Sunday to continue his rehab with the team medical staff."

Clarke will fly on Tuesday, six days ahead of the rest of the Test squad, so that he can give his hamstring time to rest before he hits the training paddock.
