Johnson strikes painful blow in nets

Mitchell Johnson has already started to inflict pain on the Ashes tour, with teammate Shaun Marsh suffering a split fingernail in Chelmsford.

Shaun Marsh has suffered a split fingernail after being struck on the hand by Mitchell Johnson in Chelmsford.

Marsh, who is not playing in Australia's ongoing tour game against Essex, was batting in the nets prior to play on day three.

The 31-year-old scuttled off to the changerooms after the painful blow, icing his finger.

Marsh will be assessed again later in the day, but management is confident the injury is not serious.

The more important medical update, which is expected to arrive later on Friday, is on Ryan Harris's sore knee.

Harris was sent for scans after being a late withdrawal from the four-day clash in Chelmsford.

The 35-year-old is still able to bowl, but team medical staff are keen to make sure he has not suffered a more serious setback.

The scans were sent back to Melbourne for further examination.

Marsh and Harris are not expected to feature in the first Ashes Test, which starts in Cardiff on Wednesday.

Marsh opened in the absence of Chris Rogers during last month's Test series in the West Indies.

Rogers is now fully fit and likely to be recalled to the XI.

Harris was rested for the second half of the Sheffield Shield season and skipped the Caribbean trip for the birth of his first child.

The lack of match fitness means the right-armer won't play in Wales.
