Coach Trent Johnston has paid the price for a lacklustre NSW cricket season after he was axed from the role on Thursday.

Johnston's position had looked uncertain for months because of poor results and concerns about player development.

He was let go after the Blues lost the final seven games of the Sheffield Shield season to finish second last with just three wins from 10.

Johnston won two one-day cup titles in his three seasons as coach but there were concerns about the slide of the once powerhouse state.

"Trent has worked diligently with the team over the past three years and has two state one-day competition titles to his credit," Cricket NSW CEO Andrew Jones said.

"Unfortunately the results collectively and individually in the Sheffield Shield have been below expectations."

Cricket NSW have begun searching for answers after mediocre results across all three formats the last several years.

The Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers both failed to make the Big Bash League finals and Paddy Upton has been replaced by Shane Bond as Thunder coach.

It had been reported that Cricket NSW management was concerned about certain promising players, such as Nic Maddinson, failing to continue to improve.

"It's been a great experience to work with the playing group and I wish them all the best in the future," Johnston said.

"I'd also like to thank the coaching and support staff for their support throughout the last three years."
