Former Bankwest boss Jon Sutton has been appointed the new chief executive of Bank of Queensland.

Mr Sutton, who joined BoQ in 2012, has been acting chief executive since the departure of Stuart Grimshaw in September 2014.

The board has made his role permanent following an international search for a CEO.

Mr Sutton, who was BoQ's chief operating officer, will receive a base remuneration package of $1.25 million and be entitled to short- and long-term incentives.

He said he would focus on maintaining the momentum the bank has built in the past two years.

"This will create the foundations we need to underpin BOQ's next phase of growth," he said in a statement on Monday.
