Matt Jones has played himself into form leading into next week's British Open at Carnoustie with a second consecutive bogey-free round at the weather affected PGA Tour's John Deere Classic.

The Sydney native had three birdies and made a 37-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 17th hole to card a 66 and move up to solo third at 16 under.

He played his final four holes late on Saturday after the resumption of play following a rain delay in the third round.

The 38-year-old Jones's best performance at three previous British Open starts was a tie for 30th in 2015.

Leader Michael Kim, celebrating his 25th birthday, is 22 under and five strokes clear of the second-placed Bronson Burgoon.

Kim was three under after 13 holes of his round when heavy rain fell and play at TPC Deere Run was halted but the delay did him no harm.

"Coming into the day I told myself, 'It's your birthday. Try and have as stress-free a day as possible.' I'm very satisfied with the score I shot," Kim said.

The American closed his round of 64 with four birdies in a row.

Kim's compatriot Burgoon also made the most of the restart with three successive birdies in a round of 66.

Harold Varner III (66) is alone in fourth place at 15 under while Argentine Andres Romero (64) and Sam Ryder (67) are tied for fifth a shot further back.

John Senden carded a 67 to move up to eight under and a tie for 34th while his Australian countryman Stuart Appleby (71) was even for the day to remain at five under.

Players who weren't able to complete Friday's second round because of bad weather, a group that included Kim, did so earlier Saturday before two further suspensions of play totalling almost four hours.
