Australian Matt Jones made two late bogeys to squander the lead at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in California but he'll still start the final round just one shot behind a fast-finishing Jim Furyk.

Jones made six birdies in a seven-hole stretch and built a three-shot lead late in Saturday's third round until he made bogey on his last two holes for a 67.

That put Jones at 17-under for the US PGA Tour event, tied for second with American Brandt Snedeker who made a 20-foot birdie putt on his final hole.

In his first PGA Tour event in seven months, Furyk wasted no time giving himself a chance for his first win in more than four years.

Furyk made seven birdies over his last 10 holes at the Pebble Beach course for a blistering 9-under 63 to sit on top of the leaderboard at 18-under.

Furyk has more than Snedeker and Jones to worry about.

Nick Watney, who was thrilled to be playing with San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey, had a 65 and was one stroke further back.

A day after carding a sizzling 62, Australian Jason Day carded a 69 to be tied for 10th at 12-under and with only a remote chance of back-to-back tournament victories after last week's win at Torrey Pines.

"I really didn't know where I stood coming out here," Furyk said.

"I was going to be very patient and see where I was, and go play Pebble and LA and reassess and have the week off to get ready for Doral and Tampa. I guess I'm pleasantly surprised. I wouldn't expect to be 18-under par after three days, I'll promise you that."

John Daly shot 73 at the Spyglass Hill course and missed the cut for the 11th straight time at this tournament dating to his rookie season in 1991.
