Rising Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson has made a disappointing opening round exit at the Memphis Open.

The world No.63 was beaten 6-3 6-0 by Nikoloz Basilashvili, in a match that lasted just over one hour.

Thompson, who made an impressive Davis Cup debut for Australia, winning his singles rubbers against Czechs Jiri Vesely and Jan Satral earlier this month at Kooyong, is ranked four spots above the Georgian in the world ATP rankings.

John Isner served up 26 aces in beating Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 4-6 6-3 6-4 on Wednesday night to reach the quarter-finals.

The second-seeded American managed only five of those aces while dropping the first set. Isner bounced back by sending down 11 aces in the second set and 10 more in the deciding third set.

American Ryan Harrison upset No.3 seed Sam Querrey 6-3 6-1 in 54 minutes.

Harrison will play Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia-Herzegovina, who was the first to advance to the last eight by upsetting seventh-seeded Steve Darcis of Belgium 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

Donald Young beat fellow American Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 to reach the last eight.

Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan downed Germany's Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-4.
