Josh Brookes sets record at Thruxton

Australian Josh Brookes has put his Yamaha on pole for the seventh round of the British Superbike Championship, setting a circuit record at Thruxton.

Australian Josh Brookes has set a new circuit record at Thruxton to put his Yamaha on pole for the seventh round of the British Superbike Championship.

Brookes, who won both races in the corresponding round of last season, clocked a fastest time of 1:14.464 in qualifying to see off the challenge of American John Hopkins (Ducati) and Britain's Luke Mossey (Kawasaki).

Brookes' performance piles the pressure on series leader and four times champion Shane Byrne, whom he trails by just five points in the current standings.

Byrne faces an uphill struggle during Sunday's races after a disappointing performance in qualifying left his Kawasaki on the sixth row of the grid.
