Journalist killed in Colombia: press group

The Colombia Free Press Foundation has demanded a thorough investigation after a 21-year-old news cameraman was shot dead by two gunmen.

A television news cameraman was shot to death in an area of Colombia where he had received death threats several months earlier, a press foundation says.

The Colombia Free Press Foundation said 21-year-old Yonni Steven Caicedo was murdered Wednesday in the Comuna 12 section of the western city of Buenaventura.

"He was shot by two gunmen," the foundation said.

Caicedo, who had worked for local television stations but was not on assignment at the time of his death, had been forced to flee Comuna 12 seven months ago when he tried to take video images there after a murder.

On the advice of police, he left Buenaventura for his safety but returned early this year.

The press foundation demanded a thorough investigation, expressing concern over the response by local authorities to the initial incident.

It said 41 murders have occurred in Buenaventura so far this year.

Since 1992, 41 journalists have been killed in Colombia, fifth in the world in terms of unsolved murders of journalists.
